About Common Ground (New Haven)

Common Ground is a New Haven High School, urban farm, and environmental education center. Their mission is to cultivate habits of leadership, healthy living, and sustainable environmental practices within a diverse community of young people, adults, and families. The farm includes production and educational gardens, and a variety of animals. They are located at the base of West Rock Ridge, protecting 20 acres of forest with hiking trails, wildlife, and diverse natural habitats.

About Green-Point (Guangzhou)

Green-point Public Welfare and Environmental Protection Association is a Guangzhou-based organization focusing on environmental protection by offering a social platform for training, dialogues, and community activities. The program provides environmental education services for governmental, business, and non-governmental organizations.

Internship Description

During their time with Common Ground, interns will support the environmental education program. At Green-Point, interns will be tasked with waste reduction and environmental education initiatives. Projects from last year included: providing residents proper means and knowledge of classification and recycling, and helping with design and ideas for textbooks and materials for primary and middle schools education on environmental protection.

Candidates need to be people-oriented, sensitive to cultural differences, flexible and independent. Applicants should also be enthusiastic about hosting the Guangzhou students in New Haven for part of the summer. Chinese language skills are required and English fluency is a must.

Funding

Yale participants in the Community Service Exchange will receive round-trip airfare to Guangzhou, as well as free housing in both Guangzhou and New Haven. Students will also receive a modest stipend in both places to help defray the costs of their commuting and daily living expenses.
