Inspiring and Learning in New Haven

The New Haven Public School (NHPS) Fellowships are unique opportunities for Yale students to have an immediate impact on the city they reside in. Fellows will spend the school year building relationships with New Haven students, creating space to explore Chinese language and culture in public schools, and cultivating intercultural empathy and understanding. The NHPS Fellows will have a unique chance to grow a deeper understanding of New Haven’s rich culture from its future leaders.

For the 2023-24 academic year, only the Co-op High School Fellowship is available.

What is the Fellowship at Co-op and MBA?

This Fellowship is an opportunity for those interested in education and improving their own language skills. Fellows will gain knowledge of world language education in the U.S., teaching experience, and a better understanding of New Haven and its students. 

What will the Fellows at Co-op and MBA do?

Each Fellow will work with New Haven high school students taking Mandarin Chinese at Co-op or MBA. Fellows will be working with multiple language levels. Fellows will be part of Chinese classes in-person and provide assistance for students pursuing Chinese through independent studies .

Co-op and MBA Fellow Time Expectations and Stipend

Co-op and MBA Fellows work approximately 4 hours a week and receive a stipend for the fall and spring semesters. Fellows will also be expected to participate in Lunarfest in February.


NHPS John C. Daniels Fellow

What is the Fellowship at JCD?

The JCD Fellowship is an opportunity for those interested in education to bring their own creativity and innovation into the classroom by exploring different strategies and pedagogies. The Fellow will gain teaching experience, build a portfolio of lesson plans, and integrate culturally relevant learning into the classroom.

What will the JCD Fellow do?

The JCD Fellow will teach 30-minute classes to third and fourth graders at John C. Daniels School weekly. While class times are set for on-site teaching, the days on-site can be flexible based on the Fellow’s class schedule. The Fellow will work with Yale-China staff to build lesson plans centered on learning Chinese. Lessons can incorporate holidays, games, art, music, and more.

JCD Fellow Time Expectations and Stipend

The JCD Fellow works approximately 4 hours a week and receives a stipend for both the fall and spring semesters. The Fellow will also be expected to participate in Lunarfest in February.
