Rural Health Service Trip (March 17-24, 2018)

Join Us March 17-24, 2018 in Fenghuang, Western Hunan
Optional pre-trip extension to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: March 12-16

Health professional school faculty and students are especially encouraged to apply!

The Yale-China Association health program is excited to announce our Rural Health Service Trip to Fenghuang (western Hunan). During the week of March 17-24, 2018, we will bring participants to beautiful Fenghuang County in the Xiangxi Autonomous Region for an opportunity to be involved in health service projects and other community service and learning opportunities.

Join us on this rural health exploration and service trip to work with U.S. and Chinese volunteers and professionals on projects to improve local health service delivery, training, and public health education programs. You will also learn the challenges and opportunities facing Chinese rural communities and how Yale-China and Yale University are partnering with local leadership to find solutions to emerging health challenges.

Discover through Service and Learning

You will participate in various projects in Fenghuang, especially in the health fields, and work with local professionals in these activities serving local populations. On this health service trip, you will have the opportunity to:

Discover the challenges of delivering primary health services in rural areas
Experience the work of local health professionals at county, township, and village health facilities
Learn about China’s health reforms and new initiatives between Yale-China, Yale University, Xiangya and local partners
Team with Chinese students and faculty on projects serving vulnerable populations (i.e. left behind children and elderly)
Conduct clinical and public health trainings, assessments, and screenings at local hospitals and health centers
Develop and lead your own health education or intervention programs to benefit local staff and residents
Join a one-day conference on emerging health issues in western Hunan
Learn about traditional Chinese and Miao medicine
Explore the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site “Fenghuang Ancient Town 凤凰古城” along the Nujiang River

No special skills are required (though we have a preference for pre-med and health professional students, and faculty or professionals with health training backgrounds).

If you want to join us on this exciting health service trip, we will work with you to find volunteer opportunities that match your skills and interests. Faculty, students, alumni, and anyone with an interest and desire to learn more about China’s health system in rural areas are welcome. You will make new friends and network with others from various walks of life!

Note: Participants may be asked to perform some physical activity or walk for some extended period (depending on nature of projects). If you are not able to perform these activities, you should let us know in advance, so we can plan activities appropriately for all participants. We recommend purchasing travel health insurance or ensuring that you have adequate health coverage through your regular insurer while you are abroad.
