Chasing Shadows: How the Privatization of Education is Transforming Chinese Classrooms

CINDY XUE is a recent Yale-China Guizishan fellow and graduate of Yale College (JE '17). On the fellowship, her research explored the growing impact of private tutoring on education inequality through extensive participant observation in rural and urban Chinese schools. The growing shadow education market – fee-based, supplementary academic tutoring – offers urban students newfound educational resources, while leaving rural students behind. In the process, shadow education is undermining the meritocracy of the National College Entrance Exam (gaokao) and shifting classroom dynamics. This past year, she also taught English to preservice teachers at the Central China Normal University in Wuhan, China.

This event is free and open to the public.
