Host a Yale-China Teaching Fellow

“Hosting Ada was a great gift and a privilege. It was so fulfilling to make a human connection that transcends politics. Ada will forever be in our hearts as she is woven into the fabric of our family.”

—Steve Machesney, Homestay Host, 2014-2015

Do you and your family members wish to engage in cultural exchange?

Do you want to help facilitate Mandarin language learning and cross-cultural awareness for students at East Rock School and Edgewood School in New Haven?

Consider serving as a host to a Yale-China Chinese Teaching Fellow during the 2016-17 Academic Year, from August 20, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Hosts serve for at least 5 months and preferably open their homes to the fellows for the entire academic year.

Host families provide a single bedroom, full bathroom and kitchen, breakfast and dinner, wifi access and new experiences for the Chinese Teaching Fellows. Yale-China and New Haven Public Schools provide professional support and assist the fellows in their adjustment to living in a new place.

Below are the current two Fellows of 2015-16 who live with their New Haven host families. Both fellows hail from Yali Middle School in Changsha, Hunan Province. They are experienced English teachers in China who enthusiastically bring their teaching skills to the United States and share Chinese language and culture with their Americans families and community.

CHE Jinyi (Priscilla)

CHE Jinyi

CHE Jinyi is thrilled to be part of the Yale-China team and is looking forward to living and working in New Haven. Majoring in English, Jinyi served as an English teacher at Yali Experimental Middle School in China for two years before joining the Yale-China community. It is this experience that has made her love and respect education above all forms of impact, which is what brings her into our Association. Jinyi is a big fan of traveling and has spent three months abroad exploring the world, an experience that has inspired her interest in Western countries, and she is excited to get more practical teaching experience as a Chinese teacher of native English speakers in New Haven. She has also developed a keen interest in photography. During her one-year teaching fellowship, she is definitely going to record all the moments which interest and enlighten her with her camera.

LI Ruitao (Steven)

CHE Jinyi

LI Ruitao (Steven) is thrilled to join the Yale-China Teaching Fellowship for the 2015-2016 academic year. Graduating from Hunan Normal University in 2010, Steven holds a B.A. in English Language Teaching. Prior to joining Yali Middle School, he worked for 4 years as an English teacher and head teacher at two other famous Changsha middle schools, Changjun and Zhounan, during which time he gained valuable experience and great skills in language teaching and got a better understanding of a teacher’s responsibilities. With a keen interest in movies, music, and tennis, Steven is excited to continue developing his language skills and to deepen his knowledge of American culture. And he hopes to apply them to help his students in China after his return.
