Teaching Programs

For nearly a century, Yale-China has been awarding fellowships to young Yale graduates to teach English at Chinese secondary schools and universities. Yale-China Teaching Fellows immerse themselves in a Chinese community for two years, joining Chinese colleagues in the endeavor of educating members of the country's next generation and forming lifetime bonds of friendship.

The goals of the fellowship program are threefold: to assist our Chinese partner schools in improving the English instruction they offer their students; to provide opportunities for Chinese people to get to know Americans and to learn about the culture and people of the United States; and to allow our Fellows to experience, as broadly as possible, life in contemporary China. Fellows study Mandarin or Cantonese, and give their time, energy, and enthusiasm to improving the English-language abilities of more than 1,000 Chinese students each year.

In 2006, Yale-China expanded its teaching programs to include a new fellowship for medical students at the Yale School of Medicine. The program gives Yale medical students who are finishing their clinical year the opportunity to spend one academic year in residence at Xiangya School of Medicine, located in Changsha, Hunan, China. Fellows teach Medical English to Xiangya students and faculty while also learning Mandarin and engaging in clinical and/or research experiences.

Yale-China's Teaching Programs in recent years have been made possible with the generous support of the Lingnan Foundation, the Morningside Foundation, the Lee Family Fund, the Chung Kin Kwok Education Foundation, interested individuals, and the members of the Yale-China Association, along with substantial in-kind support from our Chinese program partners.
