Health Programs
Yale-China has been engaged in health education in China since the early years of the 20th century, when we founded medical institutions in Hunan province that remain major centers of medical education and care to this day. Today Yale-China's work in health can be categorized into three key areas:
- The training of health care and public health professionals
- Work related to HIV/AIDS and infection control
- Health education and healthcare for the underserved
In some cases, our health programs will fit into two, if not all three, of the above categories. In every case, our health work is built on a foundation of strong collaboration with Chinese partners. Sometimes our partners are institutions with whom we have had a historic relationship; at other times, we are forging new relationships with other institutions or groups, such as local governments, grassroots NGOs, community health centers, or universities.
Current initiatives include work in the fields of nursing education, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, infection control, fellowships for Chinese women working in the health professions, community outreach, internal migration and health, and scholarships for medical and nursing students at Xiangya School of Medicine. Yale-China also publishes the
Yale-China Health Journal, a journal highlighting recent research related to health care and health education in China.
Yale-China's health work in recent years has been made possible with the generous support of the Chia Family Foundation, the Chung Kin Kwok Education Foundation, the C. E. & S. Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Sun Hung Kai Properties-Kwoks' Foundation Limited, the World AIDS Foundation, Barry & Martin's Trust, the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University, and the members of the Yale-China Association, along with substantial in-kind contributions from our Chinese program partners.
