Yale-China Scholarship Program

The Yale-China Scholarship Program at Xiangya School of Medicine is made possible with the generous support of Yale-China members and donors. Since 2003, the program has awarded almost 1,000 scholarships to medical, nursing, and public health students. During the 2008-2009 academic year, 120 scholarships were awarded. Students are selected annually on the basis of academic performance, commitment to service, and financial need.

The Yale-China Scholarships Program meets critical financial needs at a time when the income gap in China is increasing dramatically and students and their families are expected to shoulder an increasing share of the cost of university education, creating hardships particularly for students from rural areas. The program touches students from across China since many scholarship recipients come from provinces outside of Hunan. All of the recipients are students who could not otherwise afford tuition or who would encounter extreme financial hardship if they did not have scholarships that the success of their studies would be jeopardized.

Yale-China scholarship recipients receive not only direct financial support but also opportunities for extracurricular activities including leadership training, visits to cultural sites, and service projects.

Each year, the Yale-China scholarship students at Central South University's Xiangya School of Medicine send us brief autobiographies, which brim with hope and confidence in spite of immense hardships that they and their families face. Meet some of the students at Xiangya School of Medicine who have received Yale-China scholarships, in their own words, on the Testimonials page.

From 2006-2009, Yale-China was able to support a Scholarship Program at Hunan University with the Chung Kin Kwok Education Foundation.
