Since 1998, Yale-China's Service Internship Program has given Yale undergraduates the opportunity to spend a summer exploring Chinese culture while performing valuable service work for non-profit, non-governmental organizations and educational institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong. In recent years, interns have been placed in fields that included youth services, HIV/AIDS care and education, rural poverty alleviation, non-profit management, and public policy research. A variety of positions are available to suit both those students with a background in Chinese studies and Chinese language and those students looking for an introduction to life in Asia. While Chinese language skills are required for some positions, some placements do not require any previous study of Chinese.
All internships are seven weeks long and will take place from early June to the end of July.
The “End-of-Summer Service Project” will take place after the internship at the end of July. The project will serve as a culminating group activity that will bring Yale-China interns together in one location in mainland China to work side-by-side with Chinese university students on a two-week-long service project. Last year, the Project brought our interns to the Hunan province to conduct an English day-camp in a middle school and to a world-renowned UNESCO site for some sightseeing and hiking. Details of the project for this upcoming summer are forthcoming.
