Yale-China Music Exchange

The Yale-China Music Exchange (YUE) is an initiative of the Yale-China Association that aims to bring great music to communities in the heartland of China through the joint efforts of young Chinese and American musicians. In the same spirit that has pervaded the educational, cultural and medical work of Yale-China for over a century, YUE is dedicated to bringing individuals together and fostering dialogue and friendship through music. In particular, YUE seeks to promote long-term collaborative relationships between Chinese and American musicians.

Founded in 2007, YUE began as an initiative of Yale graduates with close ties to China. Each June, a chamber orchestra consisting of roughly equal numbers of Chinese and American musicians will convene for two weeks to tour throughout China, performing a wide repertoire that encompasses core works from the Western tradition and outstanding examples of modern and contemporary Chinese and American music.

YUE is a unique opportunity for young musicians between the ages of 18 and 30 to experience first-hand the impact music can have on cross-cultural dialogue and on communities with limited access to live musical performances. It is also an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with musicians with very different backgrounds and training.

The Yale-China Music Exchange 2008 will take place between June 14 and June 30. Rehearsals will take place in Changsha, Hunan Province, followed by a 9-day performance tour through China. All expenses in China will be paid, and financial support is available for travel between the US and China. If you are interested in applying, click here for further information.

We hope you will join us in June 2008!
